October
Guernsey Post Office was established, the first lighthouses were built on the Casquets, and a man who should have been appearing in court made himself disappear from a ferry.
It was the month in which Guernsey got its first independent radio station - Island FM - and the Express & Star bought the Guernsey Press. Channel Television was at risk of losing its license to broadcast, and there were big changes in Sark when the island voted by a majority to switch from the old feudal system, on which it had often marketed itself to visitors, to democracy.
