December
Guernsey Police made the world's first ever underwater arrest when it nabbed a diver picking up ormers close to Castle Cornet. Two ships - the SS Rossgull and Rose of Devon - both of which belonged to the same Guernsey shipping magnate, sunk, and when a third went down, just north of Guernsey, only one man survived. He was washed up on a rock off Herm, lived for a while on shellfish, and built himself a primitive shelter.
The Guernsey Tapestry was completed, with ten embroidered panels recounting Guernsey's history through the last 1000 years. It made no mention of the 1843 earthquake, or the birth of Potato Peel Pie Society author, Mary Ann Shaffer, both of which happened in December.
