The Beatles and The Rolling Stones have both appeared in Guernsey in August - and so did Charlie Chaplin. His stage act didn't go well. Queen Victoria visited Guernsey in August, and returned a few years later to inspect St Peter Port's Victoria Tower, built in her honour.
The foundation stone of Hanois Lighthouse was laid, and so was the first stone of the De Saumarez Memorial, which was knocked down during the Occupation as it was blocking a German gun. The month has had its fair share of accidents, with a tomato ship colliding with a tanker and losing its whole cargo, and the tenant of Jethou being rescued from the sea after several hours on his capsized punt.
