The Imperial Hotel welcomed its first guests in May, Guernsey Airport waved off its first passengers, and work started on the Victoria Tower. Elizabeth College was also founded in this month.

Names that feature this month include Denys Corbet, who was born, Victor Hugo, who died, and John Doyle, who was appointed Lieutenant-Governor and whose extensive programme of works is still benefiting Guernsey today.
